What to Wear: The Ultimate Swamp Tour Packing List
Don't let a bad outfit ruin your bayou adventure. From footwear to sun protection, here is what to wear on a swamp tour.
Dressing for the Bayou
Whether you’re on a high-speed airboat or a slow-moving pontoon, the environment is unpredictable. You’ll deal with sun, wind, occasional splashes, and the local “wildlife” (mosquitoes).
The Essentials Checklist
1. Footwear
- Do: Wear closed-toe shoes with grip (sneakers, hiking sandals, or boots). Docks can be slippery.
- Don’t: Wear flip-flops. They offer no protection and are easy to lose if you’re on an airboat.
2. Clothing
- Summer: Lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics. Long-sleeve fishing shirts (UV rated) are the local gold standard—they keep you cool and block bugs.
- Winter: Layers. Wear a windbreaker or light jacket even if it’s 60 degrees in the city. On the water, it counts.
3. Accessories
- Sunglasses (with a strap): The glare off the water is intense. If you’re on an airboat, a strap is mandatory unless you want your Ray-Bans to become alligator food.
- Hat: Choose one that fits tight.
The “Bayou Day Bag”
- Bug Spray: 20% DEET or Picaridin.
- Sunscreen: Reef-safe is preferred.
- Ziploc Bag: For your phone and camera in case of a sudden rain shower.
Final Advice: You aren’t going to a gala. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little bit of “swamp water” or mud on.
